I'm in the midst of re-reading this book, right now, for something like the sixth or seventh time. I love this thing, but I'm also sad that my French isn't better, because I suspect it would be even more hilarious in the original. As it is, this book is actually the third novel to feature the protagonist Solal, but alas, the first two novels haven't been translated into English--or, if they have, I can't find them. It's set in the 1930s in Geneva, and is a withering portrait, among other things, of the complete uselessness of the League of Nations. It also has the funniest set of social-climbing characters ever.
