This book is a prime example of what I love about fiction. Great fiction allows us not only to follow a story of a person's life, but to examine the society and surroundings of a community in a way that would be impossible if you were only reading nonfiction propaganda like tourist guides and such. The world of Japanese society is about the most foreign thing possible to a girl like me and I enjoyed the oportunity to expore it through a young geisha's eyes.
This is a thoroughly weird book. Ben is an incredibly smart guy, and the shit he thinks up in this is incessantly surprising and funny. I could have handled a little more story, actually a lot more story... I almost put the book down several times. Ultimately the language and the quirks were enough to keep me satisfied.
